Carrying Out the Mission of Christ
First Avenue Presbyterian Church is strongly motivated to serve others in our community, locally and worldwide.
Helping Those In Need
We provide sack lunches and bottles of water for needy drop-ins who come to the door of the Church. We collect non-perishable food to provide food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas time for those in need of a helping hand, within the congregation and in the Denver Metro area. Financial donations and other assistance are pledged to the Urban Peak Shelter for Homeless Teens, Denver Inner City Parish, Neighborly Service, the NewGenesis working people's shelter located at Central Presbyterian Church, and others.
The Church proudly hosts The Third Story Ministry, which runs the Whiz Kids after-school tutoring program on Monday evening, and Street Church on Wednesday and Thursday evenings during the school year. These programs provide meals on each of these evenings, serving children who find themselves in the most desperate economic and social circumstances in, around and separated from our Denver community.
The Church is home to a Cocaine Anonymous group, and the Church, through its Board of Deacons, lends support to Sobriety House, a residential treatment center located directly across the street from the Church.
Serving the World Community
First Avenue Presbyterian Church is a partner in the Zimbabwe Mission Partnership of Denver Presbytery, which supports a desperately needed Orphan Care Center in that troubled nation. And in order to be a place of welcome and hospitality for all people, we have formed a new mission partnership for "Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Immigrants."
